Leicester City Mayor Peter Soulsby speaks to EAVA FM

Leicester City Mayor Peter Soulsby joined us here at EAVA FM via the phone to talk about the up coming EDL March on Saturday 4th February 2012.

Mayor Peter Soulsby started the interview by stressing that businesses should carry on as normal if possible; so we can keep normality in the city. The Mayor's view on the EDL (English Defence League) is that it is an unpleasant organisation because it divides communities.

Not only will the EDL be marching in the town, but the Unite Against Fascism (UAF) will also be demonstrating in another part of the town centre. The march will be between 12.30pm and 2pm, bars and clubs are asked to stay closed beforehand to minimise the risk of destruction, the march/ protest costs the police and council a lot of money to keep the march peaceful, so anything that helps to minimise the disruption will be appreciated.

The police can prevent them marching but are not allowed to stop the demonstrating, because unlike other countries we have rights to show our opinions. Last time the police tried to stop the march it caused a lot of disruption for hours even after the event had finished, so the best way or least worst way of dealing with this is to let the EDL do their controlled march for a limited amount of time.

If you hear rumours about what is going on tune into EAVA FM and we will give you all the up to date information about what is happening or talk to the police and find out the reality of what is happening.

"Remain united." - Mayor Peter Soulsby.

Towards the end of the interview Peter wanted to take the opportunity to say how proud he is to have the diverse communities in Leicester and said,

"We welcome the work that EAVA FM does in Leicester and I look forward to coming into the studio to talk about more positives in Leicester in the future." - Mayor Peter Soulsby
