Graham Kensett from Guide Dogs visits EAVA FM

10th April 2012 saw Graham Kensett, the mobility team manager for Guide Dogs come into the studio for an interview to talk about the charity and how they help the blind and partially sighted.

Graham as worked with Guide Dogs for 28 years, he started off with training the dogs and now he has worked his way up to manage a team of trainers.

The Guide Dogs charity helps provide mobility and freedom to blind and partially sighted people. They also campaign for the rights of people with visual impairment; they also educate the public about eye care and fund eye disease research.

Guide Dogs have been breeding and training dogs for more than 75 years. Guide Dogs deliver confidence-building rehabilitation services to adults, young people and children.

The Guide Dogs start off from 0 – 12 months with puppy walkers within a family environment, then from 12 – 14 months is when there main training takes place and at 18 months old is when the dog is fully trained. They get trained to stop at kerbs, avoid obstacles like people and solid objects and they teach the handlers how to work a guide dog.

The charity gets no funding from they government and therefore rely on donations from the public. This can be in the form of sponsoring a puppy and you will get updates on how your puppy is doing or you can name a puppy, or simply give a donation.
