Channi Singh from Alaap phone interview and last visit at EAVA FM

During Dee’s mid morning show on Monday 16th April she interviewed Channi Singh the godfather of Bhangra, via the telephone, where he spoke about his new album release.

But firstly let’s find out a bit more information about who Channi Singh is. Channi was born in Salar Village in Punjab, during his childhood he had a keen interest in music and singing. In 1975 he married and moved to England, after a few months Channi started to believe that music would be the best approach in educating the young Asian community about their cultural roots, and due to this he thought of forming his own band. When he moved to England he met a few talented musicians who later become his band members and the birth of Alaap began.

Here is a video of Channi and his daughter Mona the last time they visited EAVA FM.

Channi formed Alaap in 1977, where they started performing in temples and at small functions. The meaning of Alaap is ‘Leaders’ and in true sense they are the leaders of modern Bhangra music. Alaap are still regarded as the most successful Bhangra band in the history of the universe.

Channi Singh was the first British Asian to be appointed as an honorary Senior Lecturer of Music at Liverpool University. He has composed music for Feroz Khan’s films and Bollywood films.

His daughter, Mona is following in his footsteps, and has performed at the Royal Albert Hall.

Channi’s new album is called ‘Sabe Ghat Ram Bole’ and features two of his daughter Mona’s tracks.
