Friday Flex Goes to Leicester

Going strong now for five years, 2Funky Arts presented Leicester’s Best Dance Crew 2014.

Date: 1st February 2014, Venue: Curve Theatre, Leicester.

We arrived at the venue shortly before the competition was due to commence. Picking up our tickets and some liquid refreshments, we located our seats which gave us a fantastic view.

The competition was between 10 dance crews who all performed for the judges and the audience. The top three would progress on to the final where a winner would be declared. The judges for the night were Joseph Hall (Britain’s Got Talent Semi-Finalist 2013), Foggy (Battle Catz) and Kashmir Leese (Prototype).

In this writer’s opinion, all of the acts were very good. It was obvious to see that a lot of work had gone into the dance routines. Some of the crews consisted of 20 dancers if not more. It was great seeing so many youngsters perform with such confidence in front of a sell out audience. The crowd were very vocal throughout the show, at points the noise in the venue was deafening.

After much deliberation from the Judges, the final three crews were selected. These were Monstrous Martians, So Damn Hype and DMU Steppers. All three were deserving of a place in the final as all three brought something different and unique.

After a final performance from each of the finalists, the audience were treated to a spectacular performance from TXS who were the winners in 2013. After the TXS performance, it was time for the results.

In third place was Monstrous Martians, in second So Damn Hype which meant DMU Steppers were Leicester’s Best Dance Crew for 2014. Their performance was fantastic with a group of males and females which was about 20+ strong. For the most part, their routine was acoustic however when they did dance to music, they danced to ‘Remember the Time’ by Michael Jackson. Any act that plays MJ always rates highly in my book.

From start to finish, this was a fantastic event which was enjoyed by the Friday Flex. We would like to thank Vijay and all of the 2Funky crew for making us feel so welcome. We would also like to congratulate DMU Steppers on their much deserved victory.
