Happy Lohri to all and everybody from the Eava team hope everyone has a good new year.

Friday 13th of January, bhangra artist Kebi Dhindsa was joined by fellow musician Bobby Dosanjh on his Friday morning Punjabi show.

The topic for the morning was the festival Lohri. Lohri started as a festival in Punjab where people believe it was the celebration of the eve of winter solstice although they do not actually celebrate Lohri on the eve of winter solstice, it is actually celebrated on the last day of the month during which winter solstice takes place.

Lohri has travelled so much because it is celebrated all over the world now, Sikhs worldwide used to celebrate the festival when a boy was born into the family and over time they celebrate it when a girl or a boy is born into the family.

Kebi said,

"Everyone is equal, and nowadays everybody just works and works so people want the chance to get together"

So festivals like these keep family and friends together.

Majority of people celebrate the festival either in their homes, with a gazebo of some sort in the garden or they'll hire a hall.

When celebrating this festival people will often make a bonfire which will light up the night sky and the evening is filled will dancing, Bhangra Music, drinking and food.

Over time People have linked the legend of Dulla Bhatti to the Lohri festival. Dulla Bhatti was somewhat like Robin Hood he stole from the rich and gave to the poor. He not only robbed from the poor he also rescued Hindu girls being forcibly taken to be sold in slave markets of the Middle East. He arranged their marriages to Hindu boys with rituals and provided them with dowries.

So every other Lohri song has words to express gratitude to Dulla Bhatti.

Lohri is also associated with the harvest of Rabi crops (Wheat, Barley, Beans, Peas and Green vegetables). People often take these items to places of worship as a mark of respect.

Kebi also received a phone call from bhangra artist and singer of the album Desitude Sukhjit Raja.

Sukhjit Raja mentioned

"A mother would look after her 5 kids all on her own, then when the kids grew up they would take care of their mother because taking care of family is important".

Many families will celebrate the festival with greater significance if there has been a happy event in the family during the elapsed year, like the birth of a child or marriage.

Happy Lohri to all and everybody from the Eava team hope everyone has a good new year.
